(HURON EAST, ON) - Huron County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has charged a Central Huron resident with Theft & Possession of Stolen Property after he was caught stealing a Dixie Chopper riding lawn mower this past weekend.

On Saturday, May 23, 2020 at approximately 8:00 p.m. Huron County OPP responded to a Sawmill Road property where they spoke with the owner of the lawn mower. Police learned the lawn mower ran empty on gas so the victim left it unattended in a ditch on his property. The victim came back a short while later and noticed the machine missing.

Fortunately, an eye witness happened to come across the suspect as he was stealing the lawn mower. A licence plate of the suspect's vehicle was obtained which proved to be helpful to the investigation. On May 24, 2020 officers executed a search warrant at a Central Huron property and successfully recovered the stolen lawn mower.

The accused was placed under arrest and taken into custody. Gary ELLIOTT, 50 years of age from Central Huron has been charged with Theft Over $5,000 and Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5,000. He has since been released from custody with a court appearance scheduled for August 10, 2020 at the Ontario Court of Justice - Goderich.
