Man attacked with bat outside home
The Guelph Police Service is investigating after a man reported being attacked outside his home by two men with a bat.

Approximately 9:45 a.m. Saturday, police were called to a home on Elizabeth Street near Huron Street. A resident said approximately 15 minutes earlier he saw two men outside near his vehicle and went out to speak to them. One of the men had a bat and struck the victim several times.

The victim managed to crawl inside and get help from his teenage son. He was transported to hospital for treatment of serious injuries to his arms and legs.

The men were last seen on foot along Elizabeth Street towards downtown. One was described as a white male, approximately 30 wearing a black leather jacket and black pants. There was no description of the second male.

Residents reminded to secure homes following break-ins
Residents are reminded to ensure doors and windows are locked after four homes were entered late Saturday and early Sunday while the owners were home.

In at least three of the occurrences it is believed access was gained through insecure doors or windows. Two of the break-ins were in the area of Gordon Street and University Avenue, one was near Gordon Street and Kortright Road and the fourth was near Kortright Road West and Ironwood Road.

Thefts were reported from each of the break-ins, including wallets, cash and electronics. A black Audi SUV was stolen from the Ironwood Road location. Property from the Audi including child car seats were later recovered a short distance away near a Toyota SUV which had earlier been reported stolen in Hamilton.

It is not known if the four Guelph incidents are related.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Guelph Police Service at 519-824-1212, leave an anonymous message for Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or leave an anonymous tip online at www.csgw.tips.

Missed court date leads to drug charges
Missing a court date led to drug and other charges for a Guelph man.

Friday evening, shortly after 7 p.m., officers were at a Woolwich Street business on an unrelated matter when they spotted a male known to be wanted for missing a court date last summer on charges including escaping custody and resisting arrest. He was placed under arrest on the outstanding warrant.

During a search officers recovered suspected fentanyl and crystal methamphetamine in unlabelled jars, as well as a digital scale and two cellphones. Officers observed incoming messages on the phones including one seeking to procure fentanyl. Officers also recovered a credit card in someone else’s name.

A 32-year-old Guelph man is charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking, possessing a controlled substance, possession of a stolen credit card, breaching probation and failing to attend court. He was held for a bail hearing and has been released to appear in court April 19.

Impaired arrest at RIDE checks
A Kitchener man faces an impaired driving charge after he was stopped at a RIDE check in Guelph Saturday evening.

Approximately 9:15 p.m. officers were conducting a spot check on Woodlawn Road East near Woolwich Street. An officer spoke to a driver and detected a strong odour of alcoholic beverage. After failing the roadside test the male was transported to the police station, where further testing confirmed he had more than the legal amount of alcohol in his system.

A 44-year-old Kitchener man is charged with impaired driving. His licence was automatically suspended for 90 days and his vehicle was impounded for seven days.

Approximately 1,500 vehicles were checked during weekend RIDE programs. Six drivers were handed three-day suspensions after breath tests registered in the ‘warn’ range, while two other tickets were issued under the Highway Traffic Act for equipment infractions.

The Guelph Police Service would like to encourage the public to always consume alcohol and cannabis responsibly. Please don’t drive if you are going to consume alcohol or cannabis, and please ensure that you plan ahead so that you have a safe ride home. Anyone who spots a suspected impaired driver is asked to immediately call 911.
