A Guelph man who collected nearly $10,000 in social services benefits to which he was not entitled has been charged with fraud.

The man began receiving benefits in early 2000 after reporting he had no income. Investigation revealed he started working later that year but did not report that income, receiving an overpayment of benefits of $9,981.

The man was notified of the overpayment in June, 2021, but took no steps to address it and police were notified. On Wednesday he turned himself in.

A 40-year-old Guelph man is charged with fraud over $5,000. He will appear in court July 23.

Unlicensed driver hits and runs
Letting an unlicensed friend take the wheel didn’t work out so well for a Puslinch teen Wednesday night.

Approximately 8:30 p.m. a witness reported a collision in a parking lot on Clair Road East in which a hatchback reversed into a parked SUV. The driver and passenger of the hatchback switched seats before fleeing the area.

Investigation revealed a 16-year-old Puslinch teen had borrowed his father’s car and decided to let his unlicensed friend, also 16, try driving in the parking lot.

The collision remains under investigation.

Utility trailer stolen
The Guelph Police Service is investigating after a utility trailer was stolen from a south-end property.

On Wednesday an employee of a business near Gordon Street and Maltby Road reported a 2016 Mara open trailer had been stolen from the company’s lot. It was last seen Sunday.

Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Sergeant Chris Probst of the Guelph Police Service Community Safety Operations Centre at 519-824-1212, ext. 7342, email him at cprobst@guelphpolice.ca, leave an anonymous message for Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or leave an anonymous tip online at www.csgw.tips.
