Two people were arrested Thursday morning after unknowingly agreeing to sell stolen property to police officers.
Last Sunday night a Guelph man reported his vehicle was entered at an address on Woolwich Street and approximately $1,300 worth of climbing equipment was stolen. The next day the equipment was listed for sale on an online marketplace.
A police officer contacted the seller and arranged to meet Thursday morning and buy the equipment for $400. The seller advised his girlfriend would meet the buyer and provided a description of her.
Just after 9 a.m. Thursday officers met with and arrested the girlfriend. Her boyfriend was located a short distance away and also arrested. The climbing equipment was recovered and returned to the victim.
A 38-year-old Guelph man and 27-year-old Guelph woman are each charged with possessing stolen property under $5,000, while the man is also charged with breaching a probation order. The woman will appear in court March 1. Her boyfriend was held to appear in bail court Friday.
Arrest after fleeing head-on crash
An Oxford County man was arrested Thursday night after fleeing a head-on crash with a Guelph city bus.
Just before 9 p.m. police were called to Ironwood Road near Cole Road where they found a bus with significant front-end damage. The driver reported they were driving southbound on Ironwood Road when a blue Ram pickup crossed into their lane and hit the front of the bus. The driver of the truck reversed and fled the scene.
During the investigation officers stopped another Ram pickup and determined one of the passengers had been the driver involved in the collision. He directed officers to the rear of a nearby business, where they found the damaged truck.
An 18-year-old Oxford County man is charged under the Criminal Code with failing to stop after an accident. He will appear in court March 7.
Repeated calls lead to harassment charge
A Chatham man has been charged with criminal harassment for repeatedly calling a Guelph woman he found on social media.
On Tuesday a Guelph woman reported she had received approximately 80 calls from an unknown male. After declining many call attempts she answered but did not speak, prompting the caller to utter threats to attend her residence and harm her.
Officers called the male, who claimed he is a student in Windsor and provided a false address. On Thursday morning the 18-year-old from Chatham attended the Guelph Police station and was arrested for criminal harassment, uttering threats and obstructing police.
Investigation revealed the two are not known to each other and the man found the victims phone number on social media and began calling to see if she would answer. He will appear in court March 4.
Impaired operation arrest
A Guelph man faces an impaired operation charge after he was found drinking in a parked vehicle Thursday afternoon.
Approximately 3:45 p.m. police were dispatched to an address on Gordon Street near Clairfields Drive for reports of a male who had soiled himself drinking in a running vehicle. Police located the man sitting in a pickup with an open beer in the console and a case of beer on the passenger side.
Officers detected a strong odour of alcohol on his breath and noted signs of impairment. He was arrested and transported to the police station, where tests confirmed he had more than the legal amount of alcohol in his system.
A 70-year-old Guelph man is charged with impaired operation. His licence was suspended for 90 days and his vehicle was impounded for seven days. He will appear in court January 31.
The Guelph Police Service would like to encourage the public to always consume alcohol and cannabis responsibly. Please dont drive if you are going to consume alcohol or cannabis, and please ensure that you plan ahead so that you have a safe ride home. Anyone who spots a suspected impaired driver is asked to immediately call 911.
